Privacy Policy
ClipMemo is built on a simple principle: your research belongs to you. This policy explains exactly how we handle your data — in plain language.
Overview
ClipMemo ("we", "our", or "the extension") is a Chrome browser extension that helps you capture, organise, and export insights from AI tools. We are committed to handling your data with transparency and respect. This policy explains exactly what data we collect, where it is stored, how it is used, and your rights over it.
What data we collect
Session names, states (active/archived), creation and update timestamps, resume counts, and export counts. Created by you and stored locally on your device.
Text you capture from AI tools, the source tool (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude), tags you apply, optional notes, and timestamps. All stored locally on your device.
Raw text captures including source, word count, and timestamp. Stored locally on your device.
Tag labels and colors you create. Stored locally on your device.
A randomly generated anonymous identifier created on first install. Used to authenticate you with our backend for AI features. Not linked to your identity.
A credit counter for AI-powered features. Stored both locally on your device and on our backend servers, keyed to your anonymous user token.
Only if you voluntarily submit your email during onboarding or on our website. Used solely to notify you of product updates.
UI theme, active scope, last export destination, onboarding state. Stored locally on your device.
If you choose to provide your own API key for self-hosted AI features, it is stored only locally on your device and never transmitted to our servers.
Where data is stored
All sessions, snippets, captures, tags, preferences, and your optional API key are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage API. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it.
Your anonymous user token, credit balance, and monthly usage counts are stored on our backend servers. This is necessary for managing AI feature usage. No personally identifiable information is stored here.
Third-party services
When you use AI features, the text of your snippets is sent via our backend to an AI model for processing. This content is not stored by us. The model provider's own privacy policy applies to data processed by their models.
Our backend infrastructure handles AI feature requests, passing your anonymous user token and the content needed for AI features. Our infrastructure provider's privacy policy applies at the infrastructure level.
If you choose to export to Notion, your snippet content is sent directly to Notion's API using an access token you provide. We do not store your Notion credentials.
If you choose to export to Google Drive, the extension uses Google's OAuth flow (via the Chrome identity API) to request access. Your Google credentials are managed entirely by Google and Chrome — we never see or store them.
Chrome permissions explained
Saves your sessions, snippets, and preferences locally on your device.
Allows exporting your research as Markdown or JSON files to your device.
Enables Google OAuth for Google Drive export. Only requested when you initiate a Drive export.
Displays ClipMemo as a Chrome side panel so it stays open while you browse AI tools.
Detects which AI tool is currently active (e.g. claude.ai, chatgpt.com) to automatically set the source when you capture a snippet.
Adds a right-click menu option to capture selected text directly into your active session.
Site access explained
The extension requests access to AI tool domains (claude.ai, chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, grok.com) solely to detect which tool is active and to enable text capture. We read only the text you explicitly select and choose to capture. We do not read your full conversation history, personal data on these pages, or any other page content.
What we do NOT collect
- Your name, email address, or any identity unless voluntarily provided for the waitlist
- Your browsing history or visited URLs beyond detecting which AI tool is open
- Full AI conversation history — only text you explicitly select and capture
- Passwords or authentication tokens for AI tools
- Analytics, telemetry, or usage tracking
- Device identifiers or fingerprinting data
Data sharing & selling
We do not sell, rent, or trade your data to any third party. We do not share your research content, snippets, or any personally identifiable information with advertisers or data brokers. The only data transmitted externally is the anonymous content required to run AI features and your anonymous user token used to manage credits on our backend.
Your rights & data deletion
You can delete all locally stored data at any time by removing the extension from Chrome (chrome://extensions → Remove). This permanently erases all sessions, snippets, and preferences from your device.
To delete your anonymous user token and credit data from our backend, email us at privacy@clipmemo.com requesting data deletion. We will process your request within 7 business days.
You can export all your research as Markdown or JSON at any time using the Export feature within the extension.
If you provided your email for the waitlist, you can request removal at any time by emailing privacy@clipmemo.com.
Children's privacy
ClipMemo is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children. If you believe a child has provided information to us, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in the extension's functionality or legal requirements. When we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
